The PeaceRoots Alliance Registry of Conscientious Objectors

Our nation's laws allow any individual to refuse induction into the military if that person can show documented evidence of their beliefs. With war looming, the possibility that the Draft will once again be reinstated, compelling young men and women to fight, is very real.

If you know in your own heart that you abhor violence, that you will not cooperate with death and destruction as a part of our national foreign policy, you may want to seriously consider registering as a conscientious objector.

PeaceRoots Alliance, a national organization dedicated to promoting peace and nonviolence, is providing guidance and instruction for young people wishing to establish their status as conscientious objectors. PeaceRoots Alliance is also offering to help create and store documents that may later be used to illustrate a person's history as a conscientious objector.

The PeaceRoots Alliance Conscientious Objector Registry assists young men and women who wish to state their beliefs and document their claims to be C.O's. We will work with you to formulate your statement, with guidelines and suggestions on how to communicate your feelings and beliefs.

PeaceRoots Alliance will keep a file in the PeaceRoots Alliance central office for any individual who wishes to maintain a record of their personal written statements and other material that can be used to document their beliefs and C.O. history.

If the Draft is reinstated and you are notified to report for military service, your statement will be returned to you, upon your request, so that you may present your case for C.O. status before your local Draft Board. Your statement will not be used or given to anyone without your permission.

You should think carefully about your beliefs and what you want to say in your conscientious objector statement. It's best to write your beliefs in your own words.
Here are some examples of the basic belief statements that are important to address when writing your conscientious objector statement:

'I will not fight in any war.'

'I respect the human dignity and rights of all people as stated in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.'

'I believe there are peaceful ways to resolve political problems.'

As conscientious objectors, the message we send to our government and to our world is that we know that there are better ways of settling disputes than with threats and killing. Documenting your beliefs is an important step towards the creation of a world without war.
