Plenty’s roots were planted deep in Guatemala after the Farm community sent a couple of hundred volunteers to assist in relief and recovery efforts after a deadly earthquake in 1976. Since then other projects developed, including Karen’s Nutrition Project in 2010, which provides high-protein snacks to undernourished children living near a massive landfill in Guatemala City. This landfill, the size of nine football fields, is the repository for the entire country’s trash, which is trucked in daily. Hundreds of families, including many led by single mothers live in settlements nearby, and bring in a little income by combing through and recycling materials from the landfill.
Karen’s Nutrition project employs three local women to make and distribute soymilk and fortified cookies weekly to about 300 children from these families. Plenty International has provided funding and technical support for the project since its beginning.
